I did not intend to be away this long but my 89 year old mother fell a few days ago and fractured her hip. Thank goodness its not a bad break but she can’t walk and is in a good bit of pain. I’m her caregiver so things have been pretty hectic lately but the chaos is slowly becoming manageable.
She has always been very active but her activities have been focused more on work than staying fit. Being a baby boomer myself and trying to stay healthy as possible, every problem she has reminds me that I need to do more to keep myself healthy.
After age 50 its very important that any of us who plan on living and enjoying a long life, work at getting fit to make the most of our life. This is also a good time to discover activities that you can enjoy in your retirement.
Its sad to see vital people just fall apart after retirement because they have no idea how to stay active on their own. This is usually harder to do than most of us expect. If we don’t keep fit, when we retire we may find we aren’t physically able to enjoy the things we had dreamed of doing for so long.
I enjoy reading and it is a recommended way to keep your mind active as we age, but don’t ignore keeping your body active as well. My mother has lived a full and happy life but if she had paid a little more attention to healthy exercise, she might be enjoying these last years much more.
We all have many demands on our time and there is no simple solution that will work for everybody. I do hope that we can all find something we can enjoy doing that will also prolong our good health. At this time of year most of us are finally thawing out from the worst of winter so try to take advantage to get out and enjoy yourself.
