I’ve been trying all week to make sense of what’s going on in the US to come up with some good news to write about. There’s been plenty happening but not much makes good sense.
Obama was in Latin America last weekend and tried to befriend dictators like Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega while he criticized the United States. Ortega, Chavez and Castro have pretty much made a fool of him and implied he is a weak leader.
Obama has already approved of 4 trillion dollars of spending but he held a cabinet meeting to make a big show of cutting 100 million dollars in expenses. 100 million dollars is a lot of money but it is only 0.0025% of what he has already committed to spend.
General Motors has announced that it will close 13 US plants for 9 weeks this summer and that it will discontinue the Pontiac line but still may have to declare bankruptcy. Chrysler is reported to already be preparing to go forward with filing for bankruptcy.
And now that Obama has straightened out the auto industry, he has met with the major credit card companies and explained how they will have to change to please him. If he fixes the credit companies as well as he did the auto makers, we better learn to get by without credit cards.
I know that in any economy there are opportunities to make money and that a lot of people are still doing fine. However, many of the people being hurt now have done nothing wrong to deserve their situation. Their jobs and homes are at risk and retirement savings have drastically declined.
Much of this problem is Bush’s fault, but at least he wouldn’t be trying to push us into socialism.
I’d feel a lot better about our current situation if Obama spent less time trying to win the favor of our enemies and more of it trying to preserve our freedoms. He seems more motivated to nationalize our major industries instead.
I love our country and I wish there was more good news to share right now. However, as shown by the hundreds of thousands who took part in the Tea Parties on April 15, most of us are proud of the United States. As long as we have the freedom to vote, we won’t let our government be subverted.
I guess there was some good news after all.
